View Full Version : Scenarios to win the West

If we beat KC we win the division no matter what. That would put us at 9-7 at worst and we would have the tiebreakers over both Oakland and SD.

If we beat Buffalo and lose to KC the only way we don't win the division is if Oakland wins their last two games

Oh for sure. I would much rather have that then a home game against Pittsburgh or Baltimore...problem is for that to happen we need help whereas winning the division is in our hands.

If we beat Buffalo the only way we don't make the playoffs as a wild card or division winner is if Oakland (@KC, vs. SD) and the Jets (vs. NYG, @ Mia) both go 2-0

ESPN Stats & Information has just released division scenarios. Each team in the AFC West is still alive. Here is how it breaks down:

How Broncos Can Win AFC West:

1) Denver wins last 2 games

OR

2) Denver beats Kansas City in Week 17

OR

3) Denver beats Buffalo in Week 16 AND Oakland loses 1 of last 2 games

OR

4) Oakland beats Kansas City in Week 16 AND San Diego loses to Detroit in Week 16 AND San Diego beats Oakland in Week 17

How Raiders Can Win AFC West:

1) Oakland wins last 2 games AND Denver loses to Kansas City in Week 17

How Chargers Can Win AFC West:

1) San Diego wins last 2 games AND Denver loses last 2 games

How Chiefs Can Win AFC West:

1) Kansas City wins last 2 games AND Denver loses last 2 games AND San Diego loses 1 of last 2 games

I've said it before, the KC game is incredibly vital to the division crown. A couple weeks back I said as long as we win that, we should be good, and what do you know, we win that, and we are officially division champs.
It'd be nice to beat Buffalo though too and not rely on a week 17 win for a playoff game.
Also would be nice that we actually beat Buffalo in a late week game with the playoffs on the line unlike back in 2008.

Old Dude

The KC game is obviously huge. Win that one and Denver takes the AFC West. But winning in Buffalo would pay off in the following ways:

1. KC and San Diego utterly eliminated from the divisional race.
2. Raiders left with no margin for error against the Chiefs and Chargers.
3. A win in Buffalo is virtually mandatory in order to get a wild card spot if we blow the home finale against KC and lose the division. (Would improve Denver's wild card chances from nearly 0 to maybe 40/60.)

Not utterly, both KC and San Diego WOULD be. If we beat Buffalo we're 9-6 meaning the worst we could finish is 9-7. The best San Diego would finish is 9-7 and we hold the tie breaker against them. Just don't tell San Diego that so they beat the Raiders and officially move us in.

In 2008, we had no running game...that was the PJ Pope era. In that game, we had a 13-0 lead and allowed Buffalo to claw their way back to be within a FG at the half. We were even up 20-16 with less than 20 minutes to go, but couldn't ice it. In the second half, we turned the ball over and got FG's. buffalo got TD's, we lose 30-23.

The 2011 Bills D is even worse in terms of rushing D. As long as we can avoid the mis-cues and pound the rock, we'll be ok. Hope McGahee is ok, he should be primed to return to Buffalo.

Fitzpatrick has thrown 19 picks this season...let's hope for a few more.

On the weather...I think Tebow will do fine. He's never played in the cold before (AFAIK), but his game seems well suited to a sloppy track.

I guess I should have said that by the end of the season we had no running game.

That was the year that everyone got hurt. By the time we got to Buffalo, we had gone thru Michael Pittman, Andre Hall, Michael Young, Ryan Torain, and Peyton Hillis, before having Tatum Bell, Selvin Young, and PJ Pope available for the Buf game. cutler had the most rushing attempts that game, btw.

Check the game log: http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/gametracker/playbyplay/NFL_20081221_BUF@DEN

We ran the ball three times compared to 34 passing attempts the entire second half, despite being within a TD, against a D ranked 22nd against the run.

And that would also be incorrect. The week before that Bills game, we ran for 121 yds against the Panthers. The week after? Bell ran for 86 yds and 2 TDs in less than three quarters, before the game got out of hand and we had to go to the pass every down to try to catch up.

You can say that the play calling sucked in that Bills game. What you can't say was that "we didn't have a running game."

121 vs Car...that's correct, but 58 of those yards came in garbage time...Den down by 20, less than 4 min to go. Before that meaningless possession, Denver was 19 rushes for 63 yards, a 3.32 YPC.

TheChamp24

In 2008, we had a misleading running game. When we actually needed to get yards running the ball, we couldn't. We had no threat at RB too. Maybe Hillis if you want to say that, but never a huge threat. We'd be stuffed pretty good, and then bust out a 50 yard run to make the stats look pretty.

In 2008, we had a misleading running game. When we actually needed to get yards running the ball, we couldn't. We had no threat at RB too. Maybe Hillis if you want to say that, but never a huge threat. We'd be stuffed pretty good, and then bust out a 50 yard run to make the stats look pretty.

exactly. That's why we were so lopsided in the run v pass ratio, especially vs Car.

Hillis was the only guy we could count on to get critical, chain-moving yards. When he went down, we became one dimensional pretty quickly. Heck, before he took over, we were pretty one-dimensional.

Is anybody else worried about Tebow in cold weather? I didn't follow his college career so I am not sure if he has had many games in the snow. @ Bills is going to be cold as hell.

Yeah i am. I dont think we've had a game in the cold all season either. Not to mention that this is an early game on Christmas eve 2 times zones away. Thats alot of distractions.

Plus in the back of the coaches minds they have to be somewhat preparing for the chiefs considering that is the be-all end-all game.

Honestly, i dont like this match up at all, but i still think ill take the broncos -3 today before that line goes to -4 0r 5 by kickoff.

My only comfort for the Bills game is that Tebow is 5-0 on the road this yer. Can we please get a double digit lead, keep it, and coast to victory for once?

The game is Saturday. Just something to keep in mind. Also, the best KC can do is 8 wins.

I actually feel more comfortable with the road games than the home games.
