View Full Version : The Tebow stiff-arm play

I'm surprised there hasn't been more talk in here or everywhere else for that matter about the stiff arm Tebow laid on the Vikings linebacker on that pass where he hit Thomas for the catch & run TD after he ran around the pocket evading onrushing defenders for a while. If one of you video geeks can post a file of that, that play it would be sweet. I'm trying to remember, but I really don't think I've ever seen an NFL quarterback stiff arm a linebacker in the pocket (not sure if that qualifies as "in" the pocket but you get the point), then throw a TD pass, or for that matter, stiff arm a defender PERIOD, at least not a 245 pound LB, much less from inside the pocket. Does anyone have an example of anything like this, even one? That play was sick...not just the scramble and the pass, or Thomas' run afterwards, but Tebow just stuck that dude in the head and dropped him like a kid.

very cool play. Reminded me of when I played backyard football with friends.

Tebow's best single play highlight so far IMO. They'll be more!

Yeah...good times. Maybe I've seen a running QB stiff arm a defender while running downfield, I'm not sure if I have or not, but have we ever seen a guy stiff arm a linebacker, then complete or even attempt a forward pass? If so I can't recall it, much less a TD toss.

Anybody have an example of one? ???

Not sure when it was duplicated but I did mention about it in the game thread that the play reminded me of when Elway did it twice in the Oilers playoff game back in the early 90s. Second time, Elway looked like he was going to run and so the defender broke towards him and Elway threw a wobbler to Vance Johnson. We didnt score on the play but it was 4th and long and the play set up another 4th quarter comeback. What Tebow did is what old time Broncos fans remember. That part of Tebow is pure excitement.

BTW Footsteps, you are not friendly enough to Tebow to call him "Tebo".

:giggle: I'm in Starbucks trying to post with all this noise around me...thanks for pointing that out.

I don't remember the Elway play you're talking about, but I wish I had a video of it. Was it a DB or a bigger guy he did this to? That play should be hi-light reel stuff for years.

The pass is not exactly what I thought it was compared to Tebow's but it had a ton of Elwayesque traits about it.

5:16 mark 4th and 6 yards and Elway runs for the first down. Watch the pass and stiff arm Elway does at about the 7:30 mark. Next play is at the 9:45 mark. No stiff arm but athletic move to avoid a downed defender. Anyone think Shanahan invented the Kicker Freeze Time Out? See the 11:50 mark.

This is what Denver Broncos football was about during the Elway years.

Thanks Broncbow, Great highlight vid !

I can see more calls the refs blew, or turned their heads.

Close to a horse collar to Willis Mcgahee heading in the endzone too.

Everyone in the stands gets a total Elwayboner. Eh, doesnt work as good with his last name. Just wait until you can watch it. Tebow still has the whole scramble, stiff arm and throw for a TD as of right now.

Can't quite make it out, but it looks like TEBOW was hit by another LB (or number 90?) and that was close to an out-of-bounds hit; Personal foul. In the second half, teh Denver P pwned the Vikes' D.

Ponder/Harvin had good plays, but I think if Miiller were in there, those might have had different outcomes. The Denver D did enough in the 2nd half to win.....

This game was exciting, no doubt. I refuse to do comparisons between Elway and TEBOW; they were different type players, and you can only enjoy the wins no matter how they come.....

Mays got his 'BOOM' hit, Doom got his sack, and our rb even got a nice chip shot on Jared Allen's dome...all in all, a solid day of Bronco football. Thanks for the vid.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I was lucky enough to be at that game. That drive was amazing. Total Elboner.

Don't discount the fact that Tebow is linebacker size and just as tough as the linebackers trying to take him down.

It kind of seemed like something Roethlisberger would do. I can't specifically remember a stiff arm but he's broken so many tackles, it's hard to believe there isn't one where he did. Steve McNair also comes to mind.

The thing that makes this more sweet though (aside from Tebow being a Bronco) is that Tebow is so often criticized and you can see him putting it all together on this play. He didn't freak out because of the pursuing tacklers. He stilled kept his eyes downfield.

And in a way, you could almost say that this was the play that resuscitated Demaryius Thomas' career. I think it was only after that, he started connecting with Thomas. You could maybe also count the TD vs Miami but Thomas really hasn't done much until yesterday. It was good to see.

This should be required reading(watching) for any new Bronco (READ: Gator) Fans. TJ should make it, in order to become a new member here, you have to watch this first.

Thanks for the posting, was a blast seeing that again.

The Tebow stiff arm is my favorite Broncos play since the days of John Elway.

I remember Doc being the first guy to point this out as a serious WOW play...several times.

Now, if only Tebow would learn to do that "Sweetness" style punch, he might go places because 4 for 13 is not cutting it.

Hate to be "that guy," but Tebow never needed to do all that. He had a wide open guy on the right side @ 0.23 after the play action. Although, can't complain about the final results.
