View Full Version : Why isn't KC starting Kyle "Pocket Sloth" Orton?

Armchair Bronco
12-01-2011, 09:52 AM
I don't get it. KC claims Orton off waivers when their season hangs in the balance, and two weeks in they're still not starting him.

Call me "Old School", but this doesn't make any sense.

The only explanation is that: A) it was some kind of desperation move by Todd Haley; and B) the owner and/or GM of the Chiefs is asleep at the wheel.

I think it has more to do with the fact that the Chiefs are pretty much done, and they want to give the other QB a look.

Chances are the Chiefs just brought in Orton with the intent of picking up a compensary draft pick after the season when he signs with another team.

I read that Dallas also had a claim on him, so Chicago could never have "brought him home". Orton as a pure backup in Dallas makes a lot of sense, but Orton warming the bench in KC doesn't.

A lot of people in KC seem to think it's about Haley giving Pioli the middle finger (two actually).

That and he likes Palko due to his work ethic.

Okay enough I've had enough of this thread. The real reason he hasn't played yet is that he has only been there for a week and is getting acclimated with their playbook and scheme. You notice how Palmer's interceptions and mistakes have decreased dramatically since the first two weeks? Same logic applies here. I expect to see Orton taking their first teams snaps either this week or next through the rest of the season.

Except that Orton's mistakes will never decrease based on knowledge of the playbook. He will always play at a below average level.

Stop making sense, man. what you said plus KC may be in position to get Barkely or GIII. They can cut Sandcastle and save a lot of money to pay the rook. I don't see Orton getting 9 mil next year.

Better be because 1) He is to back up if their first goes down or 2) They are sucking for Luck. Let me know when that compensation pick is going to be worth $2.5 million. That won't be a 2nd round pick or even a 3rd rounder.

Being that he's gone I don't really care but given that he went to a division rival of course makes me pay a little attention. Especially since it's a team we still play the last game of the season no less.

I could be wrong but my guess is that they want to make sure he's 100% comfortable with the offense before inserting him. In addition it wouldn't surprise me if Cassel never gets that job back.
No one thinks Orton is an elite QB but many think he's underrated and at least above average. I think they brought him in with the hope of signing him to a multiyear deal and dumping Cassel. Now I have no idea how the financial side of it works but assuming the Chiefs can work out the money I wouldn't be surprised if #8 is their QB at least for a few years. Regardless I thank him for his time here and wish him well..... Unless he's playing us. :)

Orton isn't starting because he doesn't know the offense. Orton isn't very good when he has a playbook completely memorized, so I can only imagine how bad he is with zero chemistry with the receivers and little familiarity with the system.

The KC posters posted on the contract weeks ago. I don't think they'd take much of a hit cause his guaranteed money was paid in 09-11.

These guys are pretty good, and they say the chorfs are only on the hook for about five million

They could sign orton for that. I'm not sure on Landry Jones though. Both Mia and Wash will go qb for sure.
