View Full Version : Orton wont report to Chiefs if claimed?

hes been wrong lately, alot actually, but here is what Clayton has to say on the subject:

ESPN's John Clayton suggested on SportsCenter that Kyle Orton might not report to the #Chiefs if they claim him off waivers today.
Clayton: "What Orton's trying to do is get word to KC to stay off...maybe sit out the rest of the season & not play & not report to Chiefs."

Perhaps not true but it is believable. Orton actually has some leverage here. Nobody wants a player who doesn't want to be there, particularly a QB who they have to pay quite a bit of money.

Orton asks for and is given his release, and in return, promises KC is not on his radar?

No, but I'd LOVE a chance to beat the guy that supplanted me, and considering I only have one more month before i'm a FA, I'd report to KC if they picked me. Not to mention, Fox and Friends just spent a whole day talking about how Orton is a pro's pro, not a whiny little girl. If he doesn't report, he officially becomes a whiny little girl.

Unfortunately this also reduces the pressure on Chicago to pick him off waivers and thus for us to receive ANY compensation.

No, no, he's saying if the Bears passed they could sign him and be off the 2.5 mill hook because only SF and GB are below them on the priority wire. So I was saying if the Bears pass GB could cockblock them from signing him.

mkporter

Assuming Orton has let Chicago know that they are his preferred destination, I don't really get why Chicago would even bother to put a claim in. They have one of the worst waiver positions, so they are really only protecting themselves from GB and SF getting him if they put in a claim. They will probably be able to sign him for much less if he is a FA, since Orton can then double dip.

Worth the risk on our part, IMO, since he wasn't going to do squat for us, and he isn't going to beat us as part of KC or Chi, but my guess is that he clears waivers or someone else besides the bears gets him.

If he really wants to screw the Broncos, he could tell everyone that he will sit out this year but behind doors, Bears sign him after he clears. BUUUUUT, if this isn't the case, anyone can sign him if the Bears don't claim him off waivers. Let us hope a team plays it safe and picks him off the waiver wire and that $2.5 million will be going towards a free agent next season.

Yup, just like his whiny act was. And Eli Manning's was. You get the point. Though i don't recall anyone saying Elway or Manning were consummate professionals, do you? They were snotty college kids who were far from professionals. I guess Orton would be too.

That's great. Orton going to KC would be a terrible thing...no sense in strengthening a division opponent while locked in a playoff race.

I think that the Bronco Brass may have overlooked the KC possibility when they decided to cut the string; I'm sure they were only thinking Orton would end up in Chicago.

Wait... So KC could block Chicago from signing him AND not have to pay his $2.5M?

Does anyone think he just F'd himself by announcing this? The only thing KC would have to consider would be the negative publicity but they could easily explain that away with "We think they were just trying to do a backroom deal and his refusal to play for us has nothing to do with us as a franchise".

Huge difference is that Elway had other options in baseball. He did play in the Yankees minor league team and played very well and could have continued in that sport. I also believe FA wasnt part of the NFL at that time making it harder to leave a team after a contract. Manning had no other option but to sit out until he got his way.

It costs Den no more to release him that to keep him. The players on the team see the new front office treating players with respect, and word gets around the league. Den went from being one of the teams FA's wanted to play for to being one that has only one possible attraction: Paycheck. And those are players contending teams don't need or want on their roster.

Good....I don't care who as long as we don't have to pay his salary. If he refuse to report I think that means HE voids his contract.

I don't hate Orton, even supported him at first, but I'm not sad to see him go. I hope he does well wherever he ends up...but the FO took a risk releasing him outright, especially with two teams that are still on our schedule as possible landing spots.

And yes the FO might have got a little PR with some players for the future...but risking 2.5 mill for some possible and unknown future result is
still not too wise.

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, and I know this sounds crazy, but what if we had a handshake deal that if a team does not claim him on waivers, he either signs with a team we do not play this year or we re-sign him at a negotiated price? Or something like that.

KC has been bad, but they could pull it together in the AFC West. Lets face it, it just isn't a strong year in our division, and anyone could win it at this point.

And, Haley probably doesn't want to get fired. A few wins could really help him out.

Orton probably does give KC a better chance to win. Certainly more then Palko or Stanzi would.

It's a move that strengthens KC, but with their schedule don't think it matters that much. Can't see them beating Pitt or Green Bay. Unlikely to win on the road to NY or Chicago as well.

The division is bad, but KC is not going to the playoffs. Kyle Orton is not going to change the reality of there team still being one of the worst ten in the NFL.

Speaking Wednesday evening, Kyle Orton indicated that he fully intends to report to the Chiefs after they were awarded him on waivers.
"Just wanted everybody to hear it from me first," Orton said. "I am happy to be a part of the Kansas City Chiefs. ... I am excited about the last few days and I am looking forward to getting to know my teammates with the Chiefs." ESPN's John Clayton reported early Wednesday that Orton might not report to K.C. because he wanted to be a Bear. It appears "The Professor"'s report was inaccurate, which we've noticed is becoming a recurring theme for Clayton. Orton will probably be the Chiefs' starting quarterback by Week 13.

I will say this... Orton may not give us the best chance to win over Tebow, but if Tebow goes down for a couple of weeks later in the season and we're still in the hunt, we'll wish we had him around. Quinn is an absolute disaster. I agree with Legwold, cutting your most experienced QB when you're in a possible divisional race is an odd move.

Well, it's been widely reported that Miami killed that deal, not Denver. So, at that point... you're paying a guy 9M and he's outplaying the rookie in camp, you just bite the bullet and play him.

I think them cutting Orton NOW is actually even more stupid than not trading him in the preseason, especially considering the fact that Miami killed the deal.

The guys in the OM podcast were still reporting that Orton killed that deal this week. I'd expect them to know better, considering how widely reported (Shefter, etc.) it's been that Miami pulled out... not Denver.

In any case, it's been a bizarre run with Orton this year... and cutting him NOW, in a playoff hunt with Quinn as our only backstop is just insanity, imo.
Trust me, if Quinn has to come in and play... what I'm saying will make perfect sense. Orton had problems this year, no question... but Quinn is on another plane all together.
