View Full Version : Should Pat Bench Elway?

Mid-week, while the Broncos are busy preparing for a division game that could ultimately determine whether or not the Broncos win the AFC West, John Elway makes the rookie mistake of giving the national and local sports media a controversial statement that will be played and replayed, printed and reprinted for the entire week. This will be the conversation this week rather than the upcoming massive Chargers clash.

He's not managing the game well.

Elway has a weekly show on Vic and Gary. Should Bowlen bench Elway for a week and send Xanders in to do the show?

Does Elway give the Broncos the best chance to win?

Poll subject:

Who is having the better debut: Tebow as a QB or Elway as a manager?

Did anybody see this weeks episode of Dexter?

They're going to talke about Elway's statements on "Around the Horn", had a huge segment on them in "NFL Primetime", and a huge segment on them in "First Take".

Why on earth is Elway making such mistakes?

give me a break. i am loving the honesty coming out of Denver. Tebow is winning games and that is great and i am sure everyone loves that, especially considering now that it appears the only way Denver had any shot at Luck was if the lost every game this season.

and how else should Elway answer? committing to Tebow is a huge decision. as everyone knows every player is one play away from significant injury, and if that were to happen on a team tailored to Tebow it is a catastrophic problem. it isn't like Cassell coming and replacing Brady and still leading the same offense. If Tebow went down in an offense tailored to him, nobody is going to come in and be able to run the same offense. also, it mucks up FA, what kind of players would be willing to come to Denver? sure RBs would come instantly for the yardage they would pile up, but TE and WR wouldn't unless Denver unloaded a major amount of cash on them.

i think the doubt from Elway now is more, "do we want to commit that much risk to Tim?" than it is "Tebow sucks and i want a prototypical passer" i am sure that comes into play some, but not nearly as much as most Tebow fans believe.

It doesn't have anything to do with "Tebow fans".

It has to do with wisdom and foresight.

Elway either doesn't have the wisdom and foresight to understand what will be done with his statements, or he is intentionally stirring controversy.

or maybe all of these shows are going to talk about Tebow all day every day anyway, mostly because of idiots like you.

Exactly.

Elway promises transparency and is slammed for answering honestly? Everything he said in that interview is exactly the way it is; he wants better conversion rates on 3rd downs and he wants Tebow to improve his passing accuracy.

I like the way he's handling his job. If nothing else, the Elway comments may energize Tebow even further.

"Transparency" does not mean "stupidity".

I didn't have a problem with what Elway said. Not everyone is sold on Tebow being the longterm QB. Elway seems to be one of those people.

He said he needs to get better; it's really not any different from what Tebow said about himself. Elway's going to give him a chance, and you have to believe barring Denver going winless or close to it the rest of the season--Tebow will be the starter next season as well.

That doesn't make Tebow the longterm answer at QB. Elway essentially said that hasn't been decided yet. Most reasonable people seem to agree.

'Stupid', how? I don't understand why frank, honest speech is stupid.

I never knew Decker was so hairy.

I know right! I figured him as the Jersey Shore, shave your arms, and wear affliction shirts type guy. As opposed to the Burt Reynolds 70s hairy bastard type.

Here's the thing, the national media will pounce on anything about Tim right now. They are so desperately trying to milk the Tebow story for all it is worth - and rightfully so. It is compelling drama in a year that seems relatively free of it.

On its face, Elway should have known better or should have been prepped better. As Epic says, nothing good ever comes from full disclosure especially when we're talking about the management of a football team. But who knows, this might be some clever strategy around disrupting game planning to misdirection with the draft.

I think the real story here is why can't Elway operate behind the scenes like most guys in his position. Why does he have to be out there as the face of the Broncos? Is this a deliberate effort by the organization to have him flying so high profile or is it that he can't help himself. I can't remember when having the management be the face of the organization has turned out well.
