View Full Version : Tebow and faith
I was listening to KOA last night on the way home from work and this caller was allowed to speak non-stop for 3 whole minutes going on and on about how we, Broncos fans, MUST believe in Tebow. He used the word believe at least some 60 times. He kept on saying that a higher power is the reason, and something really special is unfolding week to week and it is all due to the higher power and we must believe.
I am thinking, "please KOA, cut this call", it is okay to talk about faith, but to allow this blathering idiot go on for so long, was just irritating.
Also, whenever Tebow himself "Thanks the Lord in Savior" after his performances, I cringe. Any athlete who believes in higher faith is going to pray, but why should the Lord take an extra interest in Tebow, than any of his opponents who are making the same prayers???
I am agnostic. I have supported Tebow from the start, wanted him to be the opening day starter, and I have believed in Tebow from day one. I love Tebow as a player, because of his determination, his skills, and because I fully believe he can improve his accuracy enough to be a successful NFL qb. But not because of his faith. It don't bother me for any player to make personal prayers, but to praise God in public makes me question why God should take a personal interest in Tebow moreso than his opponents who make the same prayers.
Who gives a ****?
Enjoy the win.

I'm going to exercise my free speech and call you a dork. If you're agnostic, why do you care what anyone believes? You must be a democrat, and think that if somebody doesn't think the same way you do, they are a hater and probably deserve jail....but MOST importantly they should KEEP QUIET about their faith and everything else.

Tebow realizes god doesnt care who wins, and him thanking jesus for it because he thinks jesus saved him, fine w/ me. Dawks postgame comments... Go to media section and watch them on denverbroncos.com.

It seems to me that evolution be that reason, not God.

I am bothered when I see either of them, particularly Lewis who IMO should be in jail for murder. When the league celebrates him (commercials, interviews), I get exceptionally mad. I also root against the other deadbeats but am conflicted when they wear orange & blue which unfortunately happens. I hope for wins without them scoring.
That being said, I always laugh at the lunacy of players thanking god/jesus for enabling their victory. Used to bother me more but I now I laugh at it since sooo many players do it. Tim will be Tim and since he is at top of overtness (see eyeblack, pro-life SB commercial, missions), I find it the most funny of all.

What is funny is some around here wanted Jim Haubaugh as coach, yet I remember when he was QB of the Colts and they made a surprising run to get to the AFC Championship game to only lose a close one at Pittsburgh and the anti-Christians irate when Haubaugh kept thanking Jesus and God after wins that year. If people don't like the religious aspect of Tebow maybe you should go root for a different team? Just trying to think how you could get over this problem and since Tebow not going to change it's all I could come up with. Lot's of other teams with qbs that don't care about doing right that you could latch on to. Maybe the Eagles and Vick? Or Roth in Pitt? Because Tebow is not going to stop thanking the lord, he truly believes that is where his power comes from.

Seems people that do not like Tebow for his beliefs have more respect for players that are jerks as teammates and do not come to play every game and only care for themselves. There have been threads started about people wanting the Broncos to get such high quality people such as Terrell Owens and Haynesworth. They of course do not talk much about God, so they are more acceptable to some people than a guy like Tebow. Pretty warped.

Maybe I have not come across this way, but I love the fact that Tebow is an outstanding citizen who always does good moral things and is a role model. I love all that, and would much rather have his types of the team than Terrell Owens, Micheal Vick, etc.
But if he, or anyone thinks that they are more of a moral person because I don't pray like they do, then we have a problem.

Tebow can not be fazed, he can not be upset by what people say. The only way to hurt him is to beat him.

You are so right sometimes. People don't trust people who seem too good to be true and we have seen that religious icons are often fakes just out for the money they can make. The stories at the Crystal Cathederal and how the whole Schuler family just stole the money for yrs is a great example.
Our QB could be wiccan and worship trees and plants and if he treated other well, had the teammates support and won football games I would love him. I would joke around and say all praise the giant oaks and willows of which we gain our strength! In hallows eve name we praise thee!.

I don't think Tebow is thanking a god for any sort of victory. I have a suspicion he's just thanking his god the game exists (which we all can appreciate), that he has the ability to play it (though that's still apparently up for debate), and for protection of the other players he barrels over on his way to another DENVER BRONCOS TOUCHDOWN (which, again, I think we can all appreciate). Your reaction to people talking about stuff you don't like hearing reflects more on you than anything else. Get familiar with it, know what you believe, and enjoy what we all can share: such as the current win streak we're cooking up.

Yeah, you'd most likely regret having someone ask you to use some critical thinking skills. Even the most cursory examination of the reasons why adherents of Christianity or Islam worship their respective deity totally blows up your misguided statement, wherefore I then concluded you hadn't done such an examination, and called you ignorant on the topic. Not to mention, if you are an atheist or agnostic, the very real alternative to a monotheistic God or polytheistic gods is nothing, and I don't see how people can worship the same type of nothing. You're misguided going and coming in your statement.

What has Obama done to improve this country? Apologize for it to every nation he visits? Start a healthcare boondoggle that the MAJORITY doesn't want that he rammed through congress thanks to idiots like THE RICHEST CONGRESSMAN/Billionaire Nancy Pelosi (who vows to do to daycare what they did to healthcare, ie: put it under gov't power http://hotair.com/archives/2011/11/18/pelosi-proclaims-her-goal-to-do-for-childcare-what-we-did-for-healthcare/) and the accidental election of Al Franken by felons and dead voters.
Seriously, Jetmeck....what are the occupiers protesting? Success? Obama has been paid off from the pockets of Wall street, WHILE supporting the protesters, just like his buddy Immelt (who bHO made his jobs chief) http://mayrantandrave.com/2011/10/19/obamas-useful-idiot-ges-jeff-immelt-supports-occupy-wall-street/. And these paid off, rich ELITISTS are preaching that the difference between the rich and poor is just too large (nevermind that the rich work there asses off to get there, while the welfare state sits back and complains.....about not being rich enough)......so let's all protest and get us re-elected so our economy can continue to be in the gutter, we fix NOTHING, and we go broke. Hallelujah!
Speaking of ignorant, how about stupid? How stupid do his supporters have to be to ignore his consistent failings? Speaking of stupid....
It's the economy, stupid. James Carville said it best. Obama OWNS this economy which he has NOT improved one bit. It's worse. He said unemployment wouldn't get over 8% and now it's nearly 10%. Another lie? Or is everything blamed on everybody else? I guess that's the beauty of being a community organizer that never had a job. Nobody expects anything from you.

Yeah, you'd most likely regret have someone ask you to use some critical thinking skills. Even the most cursory examination of the reasons why adherents to Christianity or Islam worship their respective deity totally blows up your misguided statement, wherefore I the concluded you hadn't done such an examination, and called you ignorant on the topic. Not to mention, if you are an atheist or agnostic, the very real alternative to a monotheistic God or polytheistic gods is nothing, and I don't see how people can worship the same type of nothing. You're misguided going and coming in your statement.
As for the last snippet, I invoke the ever-wise Chesterton:
"It is the test of a good religion whether you can joke about it."

That every time you watch your favorite football team play you will have to get disturbed by Tebow thanking the Lord. Inside you will feel like Tebow shoving it down your throat and I guess you choke on that.
That is your problem though not the Broncos, Tebow's, or anyone on the Mane.
Well, your wrong. I don't view it as a problem. Honestly, I hope Tebow thanks the Lord over and over the rest of the season and hopefully any postseason. That could only mean good things.
Somehow I think if Tebow came out and stated he supported Obama, that his detractors would suddenly have no problem with him since I believe most of them are Got hating athiests.
I honestly believe there is a better chance that Tebow is a more likely a democrat than a republican. Anyone who puts others first and would be willing to help someone else before him/herself fits more of a liberal philosophy.

I don't believe he believes he is thanking god for his performance in that game but more so thanking God for the chance to be in a position to do the things he's doing... I see nothing wrong with it
exactly. I only have problems with players that specify that Jesus/God gave them the win. Tebow uses his religion for his strength and guidance. I think hard work is what gets athletes the upper edge. Strengths of spirituality can be a huge factor in a player's ability to press on. But, the caller should have been cut off. Was he calling from Rural Florida?

I think you are mixing up religious values with political values. While many people try to live by putting others first, they do not believe the government should be the mechanism for this.
I would also like to echo the fact of many other posters on here that have said Tebow is not forcing his religion on anybody else. He also has never said or implied his morals are superior to anyone else's.

Great article I saw yesterday that ties into this comment:
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/Tim-Tebow-why-the-heck-do-we-hate-him-110211
I have to say of all the blogs I've read about Tebow and his faith this one is the best yet. Thanks for sharing it; I plan to share it with others. The wife and I give thanks everyday when we wake up and before every meal whether we are at home or eating out. We don’t flaunt nor try to shame or embarrass anyone in the process it’s about surrendering to something that is greater than us.
The way I look at it is if someone is taking prayer personal they must take other things personal and therefore have some sort of guilt, shame or confusion about what they believe. I’ve always liked the motto: “What you think of me is none of my business.” It applies here because if you’re worried about me you’ve just gone outside of your own hula-hoop and involved yourself in something that has absolutely nothing to do with you.
I have respect for non-believers; I don't shame any of the friends that I have in my circle right now because they don't believe. I live in one of the most liberal cities in America that supports every liberal cause imaginable, whether it’s gay marriage, drug legalization, going green, socialism or fill in the blank. But when it comes to faith I don’t judge anyone and keep my opinions to myself unless I’m engaged openly and honestly among friends.
On my facebook page I’ll get into politics because that’s something that’s important to openly debate but I never bash on someone who doesn’t believe in what I do from a faith prospective ever because that is the most personal choice of all and it’s the basis of which this country was founded.
The same should apply to Tebow, whether you believe what he is doing is genuine or not he should have the right to give thanks in any manner he wants. It seems to me the people who are most offended tend to be people who claim to be for free speech become opposed to it as soon as it’s something of which they disagree. Whether you’re Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Agnostic or believe in the moon bat god or no God at all hypocrisy is the worst of all wrongs.
Just leave Tebow alone, what he believes is none of my business and is none of yours. If he makes you uncomfortable, then that’s your problem not his. I’m done here.

Good reply. I don't mean to accuse Tebow of saying that his morals are superior that of someone else's who don't share his beliefs. But there are plenty of people in this world who will claim Tebow's morals are superior just because of his beliefs.

You're confusing whether people give more on their own accord, or whether you agree with the Government taking your money and redistributing it to where THEY think fits best, not you personally.

I would put politics aside here, but you called me out so I will respond.
Ya know. I know whats right or wrong. The policies in our government have favored rich, power and business for too long while the little guy has been ****ed over. Its time for a level playing field and its gonna take some time to get out from under Bush policies that put us in this hole. Any reasonable person could see this. I'm done. I just don't think it is pushing it on people. People ask Tebow where does your drive come from, he answers my faith makes me strong. They say how do you deal with pressure and haters, he says my faith and family keep me grounded and I know that football is not the most important thing etc etc.

I think Shaaf believes that dinosaurs are only in the thousands of years and were around when man was here too.
As for Tebow, since it seems he starts every interview with praising Jesus, does he do it when journalist interview him for a piece in the newspaper or magazine? Also, if you happen to see him walking down the street and ask him a question about the game, does he start it off with, "Well first I would like to thank my Savior". The reason I say this is because if he only waits to do it when the cameras are on, then he is doing it for the exposure. There is nothing wrong with it but I believe it comes off as more preaching then something he says at every moment.

This is a misunderstanding of Tebow's faith.
Did you catch the after game interview on NFLN? He talks about it. Go watch and you'll see.
Good Point.
On another point, I think the main reason Tebow is despised is because there isn't a phony bone in his body. As Fox said Friday, he's the real deal and "walks the walk."
Why is this important? Because it shatters the non-believers belief that Christians are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites and phonies, and apparently that is a threat to them.

why should the Lord take an extra interest in Tebow, than any of his opponents who are making the same prayers???Why should you take extra interest in what Tebow says about god?
I am agnostic. I have supported Tebow from the start, wanted him to be the opening day starter, and I have believed in Tebow from day one. I love Tebow as a player, because of his determination, his skills, and because I fully believe he can improve his accuracy enough to be a successful NFL qb. But not because of his faith. It don't bother me for any player to make personal prayers, but to praise God in public makes me question why God should take a personal interest in Tebow moreso than his opponents who make the same prayers.I am agnostic as well which makes it very easy for me not to care when people talk about god. I can't stand religious practice because I don't think it has anything to do with higher power, but I could care less if good people rely on religion to make it through the day.

Wow. Sometime take a sabbatical to a country where the gov't has made it "a level playing field" for everyone. And then talk to those people and see how they like having their freedom taken away.
Capitolism is freedom. Work more if you want more. Socialism is NOT freedom. There you live at whatever level the elite gov't thinks you SHOULD live (so that it is, you know....level), while they use your money to live like kings. Research it a little if you're bored.

Just curious...how can you believe that dinosaurs existed and not believe in macro evolution? Wouldn't that mean that all the species that ever existed were all alive at the same time and species have been gradually going extinct? There is absolutely no evidence for that. The “theory” of evolution is what they call a theory have you forgotten that very important word? Seems to have slipped your mind I think. It is theory that could be true or it could be a theory that could be false or it could even be partially true that’s why they call it a theory. I took some science classes when I went to high school and college and nowhere did I read that evolution was a fact.
As for God or Jesus, or some other form of a Higher Power or intelligent design that too could be considered a theory even mythology I suppose depending on where you come down on your individual belief.
I choose to believe that even if man did evolve from a single cell of slime it wasn’t because we came from star dust or big bangs. IMO that’s science fiction not science fact. Even if you believe we all come from a big bang where, who or how was it created? It’s absolutely impossible for me to believe that some form of Higher Power was not involved in the making of man, earth and the infinite universe.
The very idea that an unproven theory conceived by any human being or group of human beings no matter how brilliant they may be in the field of science can explain the human condition nor all of the miracles that happen in life everyday whether you have the ability to detect them or not.
Yes there are some happy accidents and coincidences in life but in the whole everything happens for a reason and I believe that the Higher Power has a plan for every single living soul on this earth. I consider myself a spiritual person first and not religious although Christianity with all of its flaws makes the most sense to me from a moral prospective.
That said I take comfort in believing in something Higher than myself and giving thanks and prayer to it as a way to relieve the pain and suffering that I, my family, good friends and other fellow human beings must endure. This has worked very well for me and millions and millions of people for generations of all spiritual or religious faiths.
So please don’t preach to me about what your set of facts or theories is and don’t shame me by calling me an uneducated moron for not believing what you do. I could care less what you believe, believe in the power of poon tang or lizard kings. I KNOW what I believe and I KNOW in my heart there is a Higher Power and I choose to believe in it. I’m done here.

True, which shows I think not only with Tebow, is it about religion, but also race since he is a white unconventional type QB and QB's like Tebow have seemingly been black whose ability to run with the ball was more advanced than their passing skills and some think he has been given more of a chance than many of them had. Seeing Kordell Stewart get all worked up about that pretty much shows this since you know he isn't alone. So when you combine religion and race into the equation, no wonder the "Tebow thing" is a hot item. If Tebow was silent about his religion and was a pure pocket passer, regardless of the results, there would be little going on nationally about this. But ironic those that like to paint others has haters, mostly the liberal mind set, are the ones leading the charge to root against Tebow. Yeah, that is peace and love for you.

What do you think of electromagnetic theory and the general theory of relativity? Evolution is as much of a fact as any other scientific theory that effects us every day. Just because you took some "science" courses in your bible camp doesn't mean you know what you're talking about...
