View Full Version : Horrible Coaching Decision

Let me just say if Fox ever becomes a coach who makes a decision like this, I'll want him out immediately.

Your 1-4 football team is going toe to toe to the defending AFC Champion on their turf, and end up being down only by 7 points with a little over 4 minutes left and you end up with a 4th and 6 on their 27 yard line. Call a timeout, and have only 2 timeouts left in the ball game.
The defense has been gashed all game by the opposing RB, so there has to be doubt the defense can stop the offense to get the ball back.
The solution would be to go for it and try for the touchdown, right?
Well, not to Jack Del Rio who ended up kicking a field goal and then saw his offense have under a minute to try to drive 77 yards with no timeouts against a very good defense.
I'm shocked Del Rio still has a job right now.

4 minutes left and your down by 10...yeah, you need a three in there somewhere

Del Rio will be out of work soon enough. Cutting Garrard right before the season started sealed his fate.

They were only down by 7....it was 17-10 with 4 minutes left and you kick a field goal to be down by 4?

Agreed. I've never been someone who has understood the opposite thinking. Especially if your defense has had trouble stopping the ball, you know you're going to have little time left on the clock. Why not get the three and know you have to score a touchdown? What good is a TD going to do you (assuming you get it) if you have no timeouts?...it's likely going to come up to a last play attempt anyway, and the fire drill FG attempts are rarely successful from what I've seen anyway.

I've always been a supporter of the "know what you need to get" method, which includes going for 2 anytime it's useful, regardless of what quarter you're in. If you know what you need to get, it helps the planning.

Not saying I don't see the other side of it, but calling for a guy's head is a little rich.

lol that's what happens when you don't read the OP.

Down by seven at that point, you probably have to go for the TD.

If Jack Del Rio was not a goodlooking fellow he would have already been fired.

Dead serious.

He'll learn from this game. Next time he'll take 2 time outs to think it over.

over 4 minutes left with 2 timeouts and the 2 minute warning still to come. you have to take the 3 and hope your defense can stop the opposition. with 3 guaranteed clock stoppages if your defense can get off the field you are left with a little time left.

also the idea that even if your running game is firing on all cylinders it is a major leap of faith to think you can pull off a 6 yards run that close to the red zone with basically the game on the line.

Totally disagree. If you don't get the first down you are in the exact same position as kicking the field goal, 2 timeouts, you need to stop them, and you need a touchdown or you lose. By going for it on fourth down you give yourself a chance to get a first in good field position with plenty of time. If its 4th and >10 or you are on your side of the field, you punt, but a FG is pointless.
