Simply take each value in each group of numbers and divide them by the 1980 value for the given group, and multiply by 100. That way, all lines start from the same point, and changes over time can be easily seen.
If something as simple as the above is over your head, no wonder the chart boggles your mind and confuses you.
Because the rich can do something that we can't on a scale we can't match. So, of course they made more money. They could invest more!

There are a number of things the graph shows, more than two.
For one, it shows that the bottom 40% lost ground over the Bush years. They ended the decade considerably poorer than at the start.

Yeah but 20% of 5 million, still better then 20% of 50 grand. Who is doing more for the country? Also very very few people make 5 million a yr. The only way country can raise revenue is by taxing the middle class. The only class not currently paying tax is are the poor people. We simply must change the rules to weed out the ones who are slackers from the ones who truly need the govt help.
I do agree though we need to fix capital gains. I simply don't understand why they can say there is a difference between an investor, and a ceo taking stock as his salary. Am I crazy to think we could audit that stuff to make sure you aren't just getting around income tax. Maybe say capital gains get taxed higher if its over a certain % of your total income for a yr?
Im not saying that would work, im not smart in math or economics, only that it seems pretty simple. Investors that buy and trade stock, along with have a job or run a business etc etc where they have income, should get the low capital gains. Some CEO who has all his money coming in from the shares of stock he gets as pay have to pay more.
I realize I don't know what I am talking about, but am I way off that it seems like capital gains is the biggest problem?

IMO, You aren't middle class unless you're bringing in $80k(ish) in income per-household.

I know what I’m about to say is impolite, but Herman Cain strikes me as something of a jerk and an ignoramus. He has made absolutely outrageous statements about Muslims, immigrants and homosexuals; he takes the most extreme position imaginable on abortion. Indeed, I have never, ever seen him acknowledge the idea that complexity exists in the world…or that an ability to weed through complex issues might be a qualification for the presidency.
