The season is upon us. I'm looking forward to a big time year from the Penguins. At full health, we should kick some major ass.

Always great to have hockey back.....and in a few weeks (or perhaps a month at most it seems), we'll have Sid back as well.

Probably the Kings in all honesty. It's been too long and the franchise hasn't really had good years. It's different now, this team is built for the long haul like the Red Wings have been so consistently good.

Oh, you mean the one where Gretzky got away with a high stick to win the series? That was the last year the Leafs would have been able to face Montreal in the final too, before the conference re-alignment. :bash:

In answer to your question, no, I didn't get to see that series. I was two years old at the time, haha. I wish I had the opportunity to watch the Leafs in the early 90s. Gilmour and Clark were amazing. At least they air a lot of old games on LeafsTV. :)

PIT 4 VAN 3 (SO)

Really happy to escape Vancouver with 2 points, especially since they were kind of taking it to us in the 3rd and Flower had to make a bunch of nice saves to keep the game tied after we blew the 3-1 lead. Luongo was kind of a goat in this game (again), he let in two softies and was really terrible in the shootout.

Matt Cooke with a SH goal and also a PP goal. LOL.

When Sid gets back in a few weeks we're going to totally own. Hopefully Staalsy isn't banged up too bad, because I'm not going though this crap another year.

Maybe if he'd work on improving his skills and less on being a pain in the arse, he may not have to play in the A or in Europe.

The problem with being an a-hole is that you wear out your welcome in the cities you play and your reputation precedes you in the cities that you COULD play in.

We're punching Calgary in the dick so far at the Saddledome. 4-1 PIT at the 2nd intermission. Getting chippy since Calgary is getting frustrated with being constantly swarmed in the second period (PIT outshooting CAL 25-9 so far). James Neal continues to be incredibly unlucky, he should have a couple goals, but he keeps hitting posts and barely missing. Still, a good effort by the team without Sid or Orpik. Geno with his first goal of the year.

EDM 2 PIT 1 (OT-SO)

No Flower tonight as they gave him a rest on the second of a back to back. Geno was out as well due to being nicked up from the Glencross hit yesterday. Johnny did a great job in goal. They should have won this game in the last 5 mins of regulation when they had that 5 min PP and didn't do anything with it. James Neal keeps looking great...except he keeps hitting posts. The Pens complete their western canadian road trip getting 5 out of 6 possible points. I'll take it, esp with several guys out tonight.

Lets talk realignment - with the Thrashers moving to Winnipeg they can't stay in the SE, so who moves to the east and does the NHL take advantage and do a major rearrangement or do they just move a team into the SE to take Winnipegs place and then move Winnipeg into the division spot vacated?

There are 3 teams in the West who are good candidates to move to the East, Detroit, Columbus and Nashville. If we are talking about moving a team to the SE and letting Winnipeg taking their place Nashville makes the most sense as they are closest to the other SE teams, although this leaves the SE with one team that regularly draws solid road crowds and the financial woes will continue for Carolina, Florida, Tampa and Nashville (Nashville will even lose those delicious Detroit games with full stands).

Detroit and Columbus are both in the Eastern time zone and both teams get hosed big time by away game start times and travel times. There is no geographical reason to move one to the East over the other, so it comes down to what the league is most comfortable with.

The argument for moving Detroit is that most of the old rivalries are in the East (Toronto, Boston, Rangers, Montreal) vs only Chicago in the west and Detroit is a team that regularly draws solid TV ratings and away game crowds so they could be used to boost the attendance of some of the smaller East coast teams (especially in the SE). On the flip side Detroit now draws crowds for teams like LA, SJ, Colorado, Nashville, Phoenix and helps boost the Western conference TV ratings and losing the now revived Chicago-Detroit rivalry might be a big loss as Detroit is Chicagos only old rival in the West.

The argument for Columbus is that they are an expansion team and therefore have no long established rivalries which would keep them in the west, plus moving them to the east would boost their local TV ratings as most of their away games would start in prime time rather than around midnight.

I believe the best option would be to do a much bigger overhaul than just swapping a few teams. I would move WPG to the North West, bump Colorado to the Pacific and move Dallas to the Central. Then I would move Columbus to the North East, I would bump Boston to Atlantic and Pittsburgh to SE.

Here is how I see it work out:

The NW gets to replace Colorado with WPG, this will boost ratings for more Canadian games.
Colorado replaced Dallas in Pacific, this won't do much for ratings but for time zone reasons it makes sense as Dallas is a central time zone team and Colorado is Mountain so you get fewer games starting outside of Prime time.
Dallas moves to central and replaced Columbus, this shouldn't change ratings much, except in Dallas where they get prime time away games in the division.

Columbus replaces Boston in the North East, which is the strongest division in terms of TV and attendance anyway, Toronto and Montreal will sell out their games even if they play against AHL teams and I doubt it will make much difference to Buffalo (who may actually draw some people from Ohio).
Boston replaced Pittsburgh in the Atlantic, one strong team for another. We lose the battle of Pennsylvania, but gain the Boston - New York rivalry.
Pittsburgh moves into SE, this is a loss for Pittsburgh, but we gain the Ovechkin - Crosby rivalry, Pittsburgh will be able to help draw ratings for the 3 small teams and this will make the SE more competitive. We get Crosby, Staal, Malkin, Skinner, St Louis, Stamkos, Ovechkin and Backstrom in one division this could be explosive.

Ultimately I believe that Pittsburgh and Detroit lose out a bit in this realignment, but on the whole I believe the league will benefit. Pacific will remain a weak division in terms of ratings, but I just don't think that can be helped.

The decision is down to the governors (owners), only they can reorder the divisions and conferences, so if you have 6 or 7 Western conference owners who would really hate to lose the revenue the Red Wings bring Ilitch will have a very difficult time moving the team.

Well I figure the Northwest because they would be close to the Wild, and that could be a rivalry. Then when you factor in the Oilers, Canucks, Flames for the Canadian rivalry, it would be a good division.

Well I figure the Northwest because they would be close to the Wild, and that could be a rivalry. Then when you factor in the Oilers, Canucks, Flames for the Canadian rivalry, it would be a good division.

Honestly, I don't see how it isn't the Predators, STL, or Dallas going to the Southeast.

Because you have 3 of the weakest teams in the league TV and ticket wise in the SE already, by adding another weak team down there you are just going to keep them down. At least if you add a team like Detroit you get some butts in the seats for some games and maybe even some national television, plus it would be weird to have teams in the central time zone go to the Eastern conference while you have teams in the Eastern time zone in the Western conference.

The teams in the southeast cant put butts in the seats no matter who is in town, you could have U2 playing at intermission every game, and people still wouldnt go, they just dont care about hockey.

Its time to end the experiment that is southern expansion, as much as a make fun of the bandwagon fans in pissburg, at least they stick around a few years, the lighting and hurricanes have each won the cup in the last 5 years, and neither can draw a crowd.

Even though I think crosby yaps a bit....guy is fun to watch and is a winner. I give him a pass @ 24/25. if he yaps like that say about 28 (aand wins another cup)...i'll deal. ;)

It is true, but unless we have a contraction of the league there are no alternatives. Even if we move a team to Hamilton and one to KC and maybe even Seattle that would still leave at least 3 bad southern markets not counting Cali and Long island.

don't wanna get happy just yet, as they did get a canucks team without kesler, luongo on the bench, and a few others scratched, and coming off a game the previous night, but damn.

to be honest, howie was on fire. he made some pretty stellar saves but i think they only gave up 25 shots and that's what they hopefully can get back to--lower shots against. kronwall's continuing his stellar play from last year, and stuart's fresh. nice start.

Sure our 3-0 start is pretty cheap, we have played Ottawa at home, Colorado (both of whom are not very good teams) and Vancouver without Kesler playing in the east on back to back nights.

There are a number of positives though, Hudler, Flip and Franzen all look much improved over last season, the Helm-Abby-Bert line is looking pretty dominant for a 3rd line, they really remind me of the Draper-Mac-Maltby line from 10 years ago, they hit hard, they spend the majority of the time on the ice in the offensive zone and they have some opportunistic offense. On defense I am really happy with both Kindl and Ericson, they seem much more poised this year and while they are still not hitting as much as I would like they are both strong on and off the puck and play a sound position game.

Howard was really good last night, he got lucky with the goal at the end of the 2nd when time had just expired, but he had some major stops both early and late. I like how much he plays the puck now, he really comes out and takes command much more than he used to.

I can't believe how Lidstrom is playing, dude is well over 40 and he is not showing it - he absolutely had his way with the Sedins yesterday.

Colorado has looked good in every game this year. Goaltending is night and day from last year. Same with the D. We absolutely shut the Sens down last night! We're not last years team, not even close! It's only been 4 games but things look much improved from goaltending to our special teams..we'll see if it continues through out the season.

Kindl is a revelation, for sure--could be a 3 or 4 in time. Ericsson still spooks me a little. Ian White has come in and played up to expectations and yes, Lidstrom is still Lidstrom. The guy is just at such a higher level, even at his age.

The only thing that concerns me right now is that the PP hasn't got going yet. I think having Raffi there last year (when healthy) was the biggest difference. He was a master at running the point and they haven't found a guy that can do it as well yet.

The Sens are possibly the worst team in the league so any win against them should be expected. Close games against Columbus and Boston is decent, but not enough to really evaluate the team.

Offensively you lack fire power, Mueller and Stastny are not looking good and while Landeskog is impressive he is only a rookie and so it is not unlikely that he will slow down as the season goes on, he is not used to playing an 82 game schedule. On defense aside from Erik Johnson who I still think can be a special player, Quincey and Hejda are not guys you can rely on for stability.

I would be surprised of Colorado at the end of the year is better than number 7 in the West. (Right now I have San Jose, Detroit, Chicago, Vancouver, Anaheim and Nashville ahead of Colorado in the West).

No mention of Duchene, Jones or Hejduk?? Hejduk still has it. Stastny looks improved imo. Just because guys aren't lighting it up on the score sheet don't mean they haven't improved. The 3rd line is looking good with O'Rielly, Landeskog and Winnik. Mueller really hasn't played hockey in a year and a half. Be ready to be surprised, unless we get riddled with injuries yet again.

Jones is not scaring anyone, Duchene is looking good but not dominant but that is fine for his age, Hejduk needs a better center to really recapture the glory days, with the current selection he is a guy who is going to top out around 30 goals and 65 points which is okay but not great for the number 1 winger on the team.

Stastny is so far from his 70+ point seasons it is not even funny, if he gets more than 45 points in 70 games this year I will be surprised.

The 3rd line is good but it will be inconsistent as the year progresses, there is definitely something to build on but you are not going to threaten the top teams in the West this season.

Duchene had a better rookie year than Stamkos but obviously doesn't have Marty St Louis on the wing to help his production, I would expect him to hit that 1 point per game mark next season and stay there, this year he should probably be good for 70 points unless he gets injured.

Stastny had less than 45 points in 08-09 in which he played 45 games. Now he's going to struggle putting up 45 in 70 games?? I don't know if you know this but the Avs have been in the top 5 the last 2 years in man games lost. Hard to put up points with no chemisty and with guys that should be in the minors playing on scoring lines. We're healthy and our young guys like Duchene and O'Rielly with more experience. If guys start dropping like flies, i agree with you! I pray teams take us as lightly as you are.

Last year he put up 57 in 74 and that was playing on the 1st line a lot, his ice time is down by nearly 3 minutes per game this year over last year, he is going to put even fewer points, his ice time is down by 4:30 per game compared to his big season in 09-10 and his power play time is down by the better part of a minute as well.

Really bad first period...turned it around in the second but only 1 goal to show for it when it should have been 3. Flower was great, but without Sid and Geno, they are putting all the pressure on Neal. Really need one of the big 2 back soon. From the looks of it, Sid will return earlier than Geno.

No he didnt, Finkle. The first goal was on Michalek who slipped and it created an odd man rush. Flower made a number of key saves to keep us in the game.

Letang got a 2 game suspension from his hit last night, so going into tonights game vs. Minnesota, we are out Crosby, Malkin, Orpik, Letang, Kennedy and Jeffrey.

In other words, we're going to get owned by the Wild.

They lack forward speed, time has caught up with guys like Bertuzzi and Holmstrom, and too many of the players who should provide scoring are just not doing it, we have too many low percent shots, take too many stupid penalties and not enough movement.

and we have a plethora of 3rd and 4th liners, essentially. abdelkader, miller, eaves, emmerton, helm, etc. are basically the same guy. filppula and franzen are not kids anymore, hudler's basically a 3rd liner and cleary's either not right physically or just lost his game entirely.

i think the defense will be good all year, barring injury, and goalie will be solid but unspectacular. might be looking at a 6 seed.

I am most disappointed in Franzen, he is so good when he shoots but he just doesn't shoot enough - we really do need a sniper, we have enough setup guys. Cleary has been a huge disappointment, he seems to play completely without confidence and his hardnosed style is gone.

We really do need to split up Datsyuk and Zetterberg, I believe we should play Flip and Hudler with Datsyuk and Franzen and Nyquist with Zetterberg. Then we could move Cleary to Helm's line, keep Miller, Emmerton and Eaves on the 4th line and sit Holmstrom and Bertuzzi - right now those two take too many penalties for what they do offensively.

On defense we look decent, I am pleasantly surprised at how mature Ericsson and Kindl have looked at the 3rd pair.

Leafs need a goalie badly if Reimer can't come back soon.

Kessel is having an amazing season so far though. He and Lupul have great chemistry, and Kessel is always in the right place at the right time. I can't wait for Colborne to get his chance with the Leafs. A big, talented (and not injured all the time like Connoly) centre between Kessel and Lupul would be deadly. Colborne has been lighting it up in the AHL, hope that dominance translates to the NHL game.

Have you taken a look at how they are playing lately? Ovechkin doesnt look right and they've been losing alot of games since their unbeaten streak ended.

And we beat LA in LA without Crosby.

LA hit a bit of a slump (and consequently so did my fantasy team), but they've got a more talented roster than the Penguins. I agree that something is off about Ovechkin, but I think with a veteran goaltender like Vokoun, the Caps will go deep in the playoffs. Their offense will start to come together soon.

Only one way to find out if you are better than the Kings, a seven game series in June. ;D
