View Full Version : Week 5: Chargers

I'm flying out to see this one live, and I'm looking forward to it. I think we've got a shot to win, although I think it may end up like our first three games, where it will be pretty close.

Reasons we'll win:
-SD's given up some sacks this year, their RT has struggled some. Von is hungry.
-Rivers has been off his game so far this year. Hopefully this continues.
-Gates is hurt again.
-The chugger's three wins have come against three bad teams: Two 0-4 teams, and the chiefs.
-Champ is back.
-Norval

Reasons we'll lose:
- We've played poorly against vertical passing games (well, all passing games really)
- Orton knows he needs to win to not get replaced at the bye, and he folds under the pressure.
- Mathews is playing well, and we've only faced one good running attack this year (oak) and it was ugly.
- Chargers have more talent.

My prediction: Broncos in an ugly one (23-20). Orange tinted glasses firmly in place.

How does everyone feel about the game?

I think Denver will do OK against the run. Close game at half. Denver will actually take a third quarter lead before the wheels come off in the 4th and Orton manages to kill the team with a sack or turnover at a crucial time.

In the presser the next day, Fox will declare that the offense was impressive, and Orton was a "gamer" who hung in there despite some unfortunate events. (that he caused...). The clamor for Tebow will grow louder...but Fox XIVth wont hear it...

And the beat will go on.

27-17, SD.

It's depressing Orange tinted glasses still predict a loss.

I expect we'll see Tebow in multiple plays. I expect Orton will throw a pick 6.

About Champ being back. I just have this feeling that he is going to hurt himself again in this game and be out even longer. Just a bad feeling I have. Rivers is going to go after him.

SD should and will line up Vincent Jackson on a less than 100% Champ Bailey. Add in it looks like our RT is going to miss the game AND the fact that kyle orton is going to be behind center means a semi route of Denver at home.

Well since jay is not longer here Rivers will not get in his head.. But then we have Orton which their defense might..

Then there in norv.. I suspect even at home this ill be ugly loss and perhaps Orotb=ns last starting game in DEN..

So there might be light at the end of the tunnel..

Rivers quietly had a very good game last week. His throws are still a little off (from his injury?) but looking better.

Von Miller may have a field day. Clary is struggling a lot out there this year so they better give him help all day long.

But with so many injuries to the skill players on offense, the offense may continue to struggle a bit. Though Mathews has been looking incredible these past few games so he may be able to really carry the load if the passing game struggles.

The defense is hit and miss. The pass defense is very underrated, even with Jammer out. Cason, who was playing out of his mind last year, is not looking good this year. But Weddle is playing great. The d-line is hurting with injuries and the run defense has struggled a bit even though Spikes and Buter are playing great. But Denver's run game isn't frightening so I think the defense should give Denver enough trouble overall.

I can actually see this being a close game. As long as they don't turn it over (no turnovers last week finally), I think the Chargers pull off a close victory. Rivers just seems to have the Broncos number.

A not 100% healthy Champ will lead to Rivers scoring plenty. Franklin has impressed, Orton will miss that too.

I think we may need this to be like the game in 2009, Doom and Miller win it with Decker scoring from ST's if we are going to win.

Man, who is Franklins backup?

I'm also seeing a trend of people who are score predicting, showing Denver at 20 or less points. Thought that was kinda funny. The word is out on our offense, unless we find great matchups all game long, I'm seeing 31-17. One of SDs scores will be from a pick 6. Yep, two games in a row.

And for some reason, I think we see Tebow in at QB 5 times before the half, and he scores on one of them, which will make the crowd go nuts.

I'm rooting for Denver this game for two reasons. Oakland is the only AFCW team with a possibility to challenge Sandy Eggo, and the Broncos are far too close to drafting Andrew Luck. Out of all the Luck Bowl contenders, Denver has the toughest schedule. You guys have the inside track to the #1 pick. I want Tebow in Denver, not Luck...

I'm not impressed with SD's work this season. Beating Minnesota by a TD....being saved by a Cassel choke against the Chiefs (the Chiefs!), beating Miami only by 10. They've beaten the 3 arguably worst teams in the league in less than awesome fashion. I know statistically they're showing better than that in terms of first down differential etc., but its not translating to the scoreboard. Denver's back is to the wall. It could go either way.

How do you feel about Gilchrist so far?

Gilchrist looks like the real deal. He's looked good in practices, in pre-season and in the regular season as well. Norv said he reminds him of a young Champ Bailey (from his time in Washington).

Fans are already clamoring for him to start at corner and move Jammer to safety (not that Jammer was playing bad before his injury but they want a big hitter at safety and Jammer has said he thinks he will eventually move there). Knee jerk reaction but it's interesting to see that opinion being so popular.

But Cason looked good his first couple of seasons and for whatever reason, looks like crap out there now so who knows. But I'd like to see Gilchrist start in place of Cason for now, but I don't think it happens unless Cason gives up a big game winning touchdown or something dramatic like that.

If Cason ever gets back to his old-self, he and Gilchrist look like one hell of a corner tandem for the future.

I have a feeling the Broncos are going to give up a lot of big plays on screens. SD already uses a lot of screens, and mix in the fact that Allen blitzes often and our defense doesn't defend the screen well... won't end well.

I also think SD will give up punt return for a td, or possibly a kick return. We've had success against their ST the past few seasons, and it really doesn't look all that improved this year.

The only real question I have is how cold of a reception Orton is going to get from the home crowd, and how fast they turn on him if he plays poorly.

Final score: Chargers 27 Broncos 20

SD does not have the speed it once had at HB with Sproles gone. As long as Allen doesn't over do it with the blitzes, we'll be ok.

Our D needs to man up a little more with some press mixed in to allow the VonDoom pressure to get to Rivers. That zone crap cover 3 did not work well against Rodgers and definitely won't work against PR. Especially when playing of the Wr's the way our D was. Throw some delayed blitzes/zone blitzes/ zone drops drops from the DL and that could really throw off PR if executed right...

PR is going to have to dink and dunk his way to the endzone. He is very capable of doing that against us, and has proven that year after year. Missing Gates generally means more running for the Chargers. Its a proven fact. Which would play into our somewhat strength of run stopping. Which means we need turnovers to win this game. If we cant get a fumble or int, we simply will not win this one. Also, I just can't see Jackson breaking away deep like he did against KC with Champ playing. Right now SD minus gates just isn't scarring me. He opens up that passing game. Its all on PR.

As far as the Den offense goes, this one is really going to fall on Orton and we all know what that spells..... McGahee is capable of getting at least 70-90yards on the SD D. I think we'll be lucky enough to average more than 4 ypc though. So if Orton crumbles at any time and throws a pick, or just decides to maybe....drop the ball, it will be a gift wrapping for SD.

Can Orton play mistake free? Can our defense get a TO when it really matters?

Orton 1TD/2 INT
Rivers 2TD/1 INT

It's what makes winning the game a possibility for the locals. :)

The Chargers haven't played very well, and have only beaten weak teams.

If the Broncos can put together a solid game plan and NOT make shoot-themselves-in-the-foot mistakes, the game is winnable.

Typical of the Broncos and San Diego, I expect this is the week San Diego gets out of their usual September malaise and Denver suffers another crushing loss. Orton racks up 100 yards and a TD in garbage time again to finish with 297 yards passing 2 TD's and 1 int and 1 fumble. Von Miller and Dumervil have an impressive outing against a shaky Chargers offensive line, but it isn't enough as the lack of speed and depth at corner expose us again.

I'm thinking something like 24-17 Chargers. The formula on San Diego this year has been to cover deep and stop the big play. It's been working to a degree because Jackson and Floyd have been dinged up and Gates hasn't been around to dominate the medium passing game like he used to. That's why SD's backs have been ending up with 15 receptions a game. I'm worried that teams might start blitzing more and making those backs stay in to block. I guess it doesn't worry me that much against Denver cuz we can afford to punt and play field position, but it might kill us against Oakland.

We can win this game.

The players will be pretty motivated to take their first division home game, and the Chargers haven't looked like world beaters thus far.

The defense will be better. Dumervil will be further along. Bailey will be back. Maybe Marcus Thomas too. Von Miller is a dadgum freak of nature.

"Kyle gives us the best chance to win" and the playoffs pretty much hinge on this game.

Broncos can enter the bye either 1-4 or 2-3.

If the Broncos lose this game, the team falls to:

1-4 in the NFL
0-2 in the AFC West
1-3 in the AFC Conference

To consider the playoffs, Broncos would have to go 9-2 the rest of the way(10 win season).

Sunday's game is playoffs or bust. Broncos need to play lights out!:~ohyah!:

True, San Diego hasn't beaten anybody of note, and if the Broncos drop this one, it could be a long slide into the depths of the league, definitely making us a top contender in the Suck for Luck sweepstakes.

I'm hoping we pull out all the stops, rather, whatever stops we have to pull out and win 27-24.

Orton with his back to the wall gives you hope?

I'm expecting our D to show up ready for a dog fight and clean up a lot of the secondary issues from last week with Champ back. We'll give up some big plays on the ground but the running game for SD will be very inconsistent.

I also expect Orton to **** his pants in what now looks like the biggest game of his career. He'll throw a couple picks, get sacked several times, and lose at least one fumble. McGahee and Moreno show us the potential of a dual headed backfield and Quan Cosby exploits San Diego's weak STs for at least one big return, but it will all be for naught when Orton ****s his britches and hands the ball over to SD multiple times.

Denver's back is to the wall. It could go either way.

That's precisely why I think the Broncos will dump this one unless they get 3 STs touchdowns or something. When has Orton, with his back to the wall, ever come through?

The only chance we have in this game is to never trail. If we get behind, and the offense even thinks of sputtering, the stadium is going to crazy with Tebow chants. They won't wait until the 2nd half, or even the 2nd series to let Orton and Fox feel their displeasure.

The pressure is certainly on, and I don't like what the spells for an Orton led team.

Orton will come through for us to keep us close in the race for Luck. Outside of the Mia and KC games that are winnable, and the cinny game which cost us dearly in sucking sufficiently, this is the biggest game of the year, imo. We were able to score points vs GB so if we come out and protect Orton, McG has another 100 yard day on the ground and the D makes some key stops I think we can win a close game.

What scares me is that Orton has turned into a turnover machine this year. Kyle had only one year where he threw more INT's than TD's and that same year was his INT high water mark.

Orton is on track to throw 24 INT's this year, is only real plus is that he is smart with the ball but if he throws 20 INT's this year he will have no real redeeming quality outside of being able to call plays.

I think the emergence of McGahee at RB could settle this team down and they can be in the games they should be in.

Seriously, this imo is probably the last game with any meaning ... if we lose. So, I'll probably catch the first half at a bar, before I go home to have a drink or two and get dinner ready. I figure Fox might be able to still start Orton in Mia on his belief that Tebow is even worse. But after that, the fans won't put up with it. Orton will not lead 3 scoring drives against Sandy Eggo. i call shenanigans on the 17 points portion of the previous prediction, although i would love to see Champ deliver a pick-6 for the good guys.

my prediction?

SD over Den, 42-10

ill be rooting for us to lose badly so that the orton experiment moves one step closer to ending and we can start to build a winner.

yep, I said it.

Im expecting the tebow chants to be off the hook this weekend when orton blows another ****ing game for my beloved broncos.

lets put another nail in ortons coffin and soon we can start winning again.

Orton plays well and we win this game.
Fox will start Orton after bye week.
Orton will then suck again..By that time.it is too late.
That's how unfortunate we are these days..No luck..

i'm rooting for 40 - 3 SD at the half, Tebow comes in 2nd half and scores 47 points. ;)

I honestly have no hope that with Orton at QB we can win. You stop our run game and get us in 3rd and long..we're ****ed! If I were SD, i would sell out to stop the run and force Orton to beat us. Blitz straight up the middle..i wouldn't be to worried about Orton scrambling outside the pocket to make a accurate throw on the run.

Orton 2 TD/2 ints...4+ sacks...the TO's and sacks will kill any momentum we have going. Whether they come after the D makes a key stop or after the D forces a TO.

Again SD 31 Den 20

Expecting 4 turnovers from our D this week...Kyle gets keeps his **** together enough to NOT turn the ball over, and we pound the rock. Shutout.

I was joking. I have no hope we win the game with orton at QB, am fully expecting 2 or 3 more turnovers. I expect our depleted secondary will be picked apart, and with Franklin missing, even worse things.

I am waiting for the inevitable boos. The meltdown here. The 2 weeks of craziness leading to the Miami game.

In the bye week EFX has a chance to make amends, to give fans a reason to keep coming this season. If things don't change then? Expect a lot of empty seats on Halloween @ Sports Authority Field.

I could be completely wrong about all of it though.

by the way, that was reverse mojo to counter all the debby downers, not a reflection on my thoughts of EFX/Tebow/Et al

It's sad that the "new culture" of the Orangemane doesn't know about reverse mojo threads. They were always fun, when everyone was in on the joke...

2 years and 4 games of Orton will do that...

I think they'll hang around for a half to three quarters, but ultimately the inexperienced and or ancient secondary will give up a big play or two to Jackson, Orton will **** the bed, become captain check down, or both and we'll lose by 10-14.

I'm thinking 31-21 ish.

It's going to be fun to watch Von pop his Rivers cherry though.

also, here is a sample of a pm I got from TGn after Orotn went a dizzying 2 for 6 in the preseason..

Seriously, why am I an idiot because I want Munson benched?

think about it like this...If your daughter was dating a real abusive douchebag and she was thinking about marrying him, would you not want him to mess up so that she would see through him?

I mean, If your daughter was dating a guy that was literally destroying her confidence and livelihood, what kind of man would you be if you said "I support her choice and never question it".

I would hire someone to video tape him cheating with hooker I bought if it made her see through him. I would root for him to fail so badly that she dumps him.

Thats what you do when you love someone or something. You don't support the very thing that destroys it.

On any given Sunday, yes

The Chargers will be without their Pro-Bowl TE Antonio Gates.

Denver will have there hands full with Rivers working with Vincent Jackson and Malcolm Floyd and well as containing bowling ball Mike Tolbert and the re-energized Ryan Mathews.

The Bolts can spread their offense out with the talent they have so the Broncos will need to figure out how to apply pressure to collapse the pocket and force Rivers to make throws he doesn’t want to make. If they can do that, they will win this game.

Broncos need to find a way to turn redzone opportunities into touchdowns

To have a chance, the Broncos are going to have to get some help from Special Teams, like they did when they last beat the Chargers in '09 (in San Diego).

A runback, a blocked punt, a forced fumble on a return... If the special teams can contribute on the scoreboard, or even in a major shift of field position...

It will be the difference between probably losing the game, and having a realistic shot at getting the win.

Luckily for the Broncos, this is San Diego's special teams we're talking about, so just about anything is possible! Ha!

SD 38 - Den 19

38- 2 tds come off a pick 6 and a fumble 6 from Orton. Rivers throws 3 td passes. Field goal setup by big return.

19- 4 field goals. D forces a fumble at the Charges 20. Mcgahee takes it in for a td from the 15.

*Broncos get about 10 false start calls because the Boos are so loud.

Wow, you still just make **** up when it comes to bashing Cutler, Shanahan, Marshall, Hillis and company.

Yes, it should have been a fumble, and yes it even should have been San Diego's ball, but in typical Lonestar fashion you can't let the facts stand their own and you must ad lies/falsehoods to bash the guys you hate.

The Charger that recovered the fumble was immediately touched down. There would not and could not have been a return for six points, even if Hochuli hadn't blown the call.

Keep up the bad work, you excel at it. ;)
