View Full Version : ESPN ranks the rookies: Von Miller #1

Ugly Duck

1. Von Miller, Broncos LB (first round, No. 2)
Miller is the best rookie in the NFL right now, and the competition isn't even close. He continued to shine last week against the Titans.

2. Cam Newton, Panthers QB (first round, No. 1)
In awful weather conditions, his numbers did not approach what he did in his first two starts, but Newton earned his first win as a starting quarterback. Newton also is already proving to be an excellent deep passer, and Carolina has made its running game an afterthought.

3. Denarius Moore, Raiders WR (fifth round, No. 148)
Moore often did battle with Darrelle Revis on Sunday. But he still found a way to make his presence felt with a run for a touchdown late in the game on a reverse. This guy is a big-time playmaker.

I'm pretty shocked Cam Newton is doing this well.

Props to Von (and the Raider WR).

Von has been doing a great job for you guys, but Ryan Kerrigan has made a bigger impact than any rookie on defense.

12 tackles, 2 sacks, an INT return for a TD, 3 passes defended and a forced fumble. The guy is everywhere.

Von gets all the spotlight and will probably win DROY, but right now Kerrigan has done the most for his team.

Actually about same numbers except for the pick 6. Miller getting a lot of props because hes constantly beating the guy in front of him and disrupting plays. Those don't show up in the stat line.

Too bad your first round pick is a bust.

Miller is already getting double teamed occasionally.

Its a shame that we havent had anyone else out there who can take advantage of that.

It makes me cringe seeing Kerrigan do so well. Before there was any mention of trading up for Julio, Kerrigan was the one I wanted to trade for. I have no regrets about having Julio on the team, but it's always nice to be right about a draft prospect you're dead set on.

To be fair, he gets to play across Orakpo. He also has one FF more than Kerrigan. Just wait until Doom is back and healthy. Don't you think that would only improve Miller's numbers? What would Kerrigan be at if he didn't have Orakpo atm.

I agree Kerrigan should get more mention though. Definitely #3. Raider's WR gets mention because he has preseason hype and was a low-round pick.

Von Miller is being used as a badass. They tell him to go be a badass over here, and then the next play be a badass over there, etc.

Kerrigan is doing very well in the 3-4. If Miller was in a 3-4 he'd be a beast as well. Von hasn't had Elvis opposite him like Kerrigan with Orakpo

2 force fumbles by Miller should have been good enough to win both games Denver has lost. He (and 2 offside penalties) single handily handed Denver the game on Sunday and the offense as usaul found a way to lose

Congrats to Von but I certainly think this list is silly.

Kerrigan's had an amazing start to the season and even batted a ball to himself and ran it for a TD along with his FF, PDs, sacks and tackles and they have him at 7...?

And how is Moore over AJ Green?

Etc

Let's hope Von brings home DROY or even ROY (though media is super QB biased), so we have something (else?) to celebrate and look forward to more of!

Looks like Dareus is ranked in top 15 and many skilled positions are going to shine more than a DL. He is still performing at a high level as expected. I just wonder if he loves Buffalo more with a 3-0 record.

cam newton has ROY locked up already in the eyes of the media. might as well move on from that one. von miller has a step up on DROY over kerrigan simply because he is a #2 pick that IS living up to the hype, it seems like that doesnt happen as a rookie often.

Doubt it. If they continue like this step for step, Kerrigan will run away with it due to the market he plays in and greater team success.

The ROY crap is from Pepsi.

The actual NFL awards are OROY and DROY. There is no official ROY award from the NFL.

And I agree with Rev, if Kerrigan keeps it up he is winning DROY but I think Von might just be the best defensive rookie in the country at this point. He is putting up impressive numbers for a Rookie on a very depleted defense.

I'm a huge von miller fan but the unanimous #1 rookie might be a little over rated so far.. I want to see him dominate a tackle all game, force holding calls, and get sacks before I crown him the gem of the draft. His coverage skills passed my expectations and it's safe to say he fits the traditional 4-3 scheme very well.

He's been dominant in the run game too. I haven't seen too many of the other rookies this year, but it's hard to imagine any one could have done a lot more at this point.

Let's wait until he actually plays to see if he's a bust shall we? Though it won't matter because Cass-hole won't throw the ball more than 5 yards unless it's on a screen to a RB. I think he'll be a good WR in due time.

Yep in the Raiders game with Elvis only at 50% or so the two of them looked to form a potentially dominant pass rush duo. They may not shine this week against a borderline unstoppable offense in GB, but they're certainly going to make things difficult even on good teams. In general though I'm interested to see how this defense and rookies like Von and Moore handle a elite passing attack like the Packers have. The team has yet to be really tested through the air as Oakland, Cincy, and Tennesse are not known for their passing games. I think this is the week where the strengths and weaknesses of the defense are really going to show.
