View Full Version : Oakland pressure from front four.............

On damn near every play Oakland was in the backfield. Isn't a screen pass supposed to help slow the pash rush. I don't remember seeing even one screen pass ? Bad play calling ? The O-line stunk but seriously Oakland could have the best D-line we see all year.

Still this does not excuse Orton's three ring circus and lack of effort, enthusiasm, motivation or athletism on his part. But I believe the play calling was horrid especially with Fox's years of coaching they should have been able to adjust the play calling based upon what the defense threw at them ??? Am I wrong ???????

I agree 100%. The CU game vs. Cal was a perfect example of how a well timed and executed screen pass can be effective. It's even more perplexing because catching passes out of the backfield is one thing Moreno does well.

According to Ted Bartlett at itsalloverfatman, Orton is our worst screen executing QB (TT is best), maybe they didn't want to bother with it.

Well when Kuper, Walton were getting ragged dolled and it took all concentration for them to just stay on their feet all game they couldn't of executed one anyway.

I thought when people were making the case that horrible Oline play had an impact on our other 2 QB's performance the thought was Orton would have tore teams up with his incredible pre-snap reads and decision making??? Funny how things have changed... Apparently, now no one could have performed under that kind of pressure although Tebow and Quin both managed to do it (although Quinn wilted against AZ) during the preseason... Must have just been an off day for our "most talented QB"...

Seriously? Brady/Manning/Roethlisberger/Rivers/Warner etc just off the top of my head are QBs who play with the OL.

There are QBs in this league, not even guys that are hugely talented that realize what their OL can/cannot do. Guys quicken their dropbacks/release, use their experience/arm strength to take more chances.

Hell even completely immobile QBs like Warner had the balls and heart to hang in there for an extra second to throw that longer/intermediate pass and take a hard hit for the team the same way a WR/TE is expected to absorb a hit when going over the middle.

Even stupid, talent less QBs have done it like Kitna in Detroit with Martz when he had that one very good season and hung in the pocket taking hit after hit to execute that long ball offense with Martz. I think Kitna was one of the most sacked QBs that year and ended up like a punch drunk boxer but he did what he had to do.

Except Kyle Orton. He just turtles up and takes a sack that puts you out of field goal range, throws that ball away instead of hanging in there and trying to make something happen or trips over his own dick and stumbles into a sack.

Orton's pretty much playing for next season for a new team and he's not going to put his body on the line for Denver.

They are great against the run. Our line is still pretty bad at run blocking though. The line did a pretty good job in pass protection on Monday, Orton and McCoy just made them look bad.

you are not wrong. There are other things that teams do to negate a strong pass rush - roll-outs, moving pockets, bootlegs, quick slants, draws and traps. I didn't see a whole lot of any of that....a few quick slants I suppose, in the second half. Hopefully the coaching staff sees the same that we see now and is better prepared.

looking at the schedule, I think the following teams may have equivalent or better DL than oakland:

Green Bay
Miami
Detroit
NY Jets
Chicago
New England

The Raiders DL is a serious run-containing force.

This is what we could have had if we would have focused on it in the offseason.

The pass blocking was a mixed bag. There were some pockets and there were some pressures. There were a couple of fetal sacks and there were a couple of sacks that couldnt be avoided.

This is what we could have had if we would have focused on it in the offseason.

If by "the offseason" you mean the last few, last several, then yes. But you're not going to replicate what the Raiders have unless you are willing to both take a lot of risks (like perhaps Haynesworth) and have them work out.

robbieopperude
09-15-2011, 11:19 AM
Just my thoughts.

Can't really throw a screen pass when they are only rushing 4. That leaves to many to read and react to the screen.

Tebow should have been in the game for at least 10 gimmick plays. I would have liked it in the redzone. I would have also brought him in and told him to run wild when Oakland was only rushing 4 at the QB.

McGahee dropped a big play from Orton but otherwise I think Orton sucked it up for us big time. Why people are debating him vs. Tebow is something I don't understand. I can see debating Tebow isn't ready or has poor mechanics but there shouldn't be a guy on this board who should be debating that Orton should be ahead of Tebow. Orton will not get us to the playoffs. He absolutely won't. I would rather lose 1 extra game this season and find out what Tebow has then go 7-9 or 6-10 with a full season of Orton. I do like the money theory some have put out there as to why we are holding him back.
Oh...and again for the record. Kyle Orton as an NFL player is just plain average. He is probably a Top 25 NFL QB who is comparable to Jason Campbell, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Matt Cassell etc... He doesn't get it done in the Red Zone and he can't create a single play on his own. He is a game manager. He would be a good player for a team with a dominant D and running game.
Speaking of our running game. Our OL is pathetic at run blocking. I just don't understand how they can suck that badly. This does not help Orton.

The Raiders did exactly what 80% of this board is dead set against. They took a Patriots cast-off who has clearly been the best player on their entire defense.

They played the lottery and won.

it is, but he is ripping it up

so given their recent uses of first round picks(JeMarcus, DHB, Huff, Gallery,) it doesnt seem like a bad trade for them

as far as coaching, Im not going to say it was great playcalling, but its hard to execute plays when the Oline gets destroyed on every play

Well Moreno starts for us, so thats not necessarily a good indication that it was a good pick
Huff isnt bad, but he was nowhere worth the 6th or 7th overall pick

DBH is young, but he sucks

he wasnt any good in college either, so the odds of him living up to his draft pick are pretty slim IMO

ESPN Spots.Inc gives the Buffalo D-line the edge over Oakland's for this next game. But then... the same writers gave the Denver RBs the edge over Oakland's in Game 1

Oh I don't disagree. That's a lot of high picks who haven't lived up to their expectations.

The Seymour trade? You could say why not according to their draft history. Still crazy risky though.
